Kevin Klosterboer was appointed Director of Finance for the City of Cedar Park in January 2023, after serving as Interim Finance Director from October 2022. Prior to that he served as Assistant Director of Finance since 2020. Kevin originally hails from Central Texas, but his career has taken him on a journey around the country.
Growing up, Kevin says he always knew he wanted to help people. After graduating with a double-major in Political Science and Biology from Knox College (Galesburg, Illinois), he thought he wanted to work in environmental policy research to merge his seemingly disparate interests. The low job prospects during the Great Recession, however, pushed Kevin along a different path: straight into graduate school at the Martin School of Public Policy at the University of Kentucky (Lexington, Kentucky) to pursue his Masters in Public Administration. During Kevin’s first semester, he took a required Public Finance and Budgeting class and says he fell in love with the subject.
After graduating with his MPA in 2011, Kevin got his first job through the Local Government Management Fellowship (LGMF) program with ICMA working for the City of Smyrna, Georgia in their City Administrator’s Office. He says he sought every opportunity available to work with their Finance department and when his one-year contract position was up there was an open position doing their City budget. He relished the opportunity to work with all of the department directors and manage the development of the operating and capital budgets. After a few years Kevin was able to move to a Budget Manager position for a neighboring suburb of Roswell, Georgia which gave him his first experience of managing a team. Kevin says he enjoyed his time in Roswell but after just about a year there he had the chance to return to Central Texas, where his parents still reside.
Kevin moved to Round Rock in 2016, to serve five years as the City of Round Rock’s Budget Manager. In 2020, Kevin joined the City of Cedar Park as Assistant Director of Finance. Once Kevin researched Cedar Park and interviewed with members of the Finance Department and the City Manager’s Office, he says he could tell just how genuine and friendly the City of Cedar Park work culture is. Kevin says he’s enjoyed working for the City of Cedar Park these past few years and is extremely grateful for the Director of Finance opportunity. “We have an amazing team in Finance and I am excited for the great things we will achieve together,” Kevin says.
