Biography

Mel Kirkland was re-elected to Place 2 on the Cedar Park City Council in 2022 and again in 2020.  He was first elected to Place 2 in 2018.  He served as Mayor Pro Tem from May 2019 until November 2020.

Prior to being elected to City Council Mel has held various volunteer positions as an appointee on several City Boards and Commissions.  Most recently he served for three years on the City’s 4B Community Development Board. Prior to that, he served on the City’s Tourism Board, where he served as Chairman for two of his nine years on the board.   Last year, Mr. Kirkland also served as a member of a Charter Review Board tasked with a comprehensive review of the city charter for Cedar Park.

Kirkland has volunteered at Cox Elementary, contributed to the Leander Excellence in Education Foundation (LEEF), and most recently served as President of the Forest Oaks HOA for three years.  He served as a Forest Oaks HOA Board Member prior and spent close to five years on the HOA’s Landscape Committee. 

Kirkland is an entrepreneur who runs his own independent landscape consulting company servicing the greater Austin, Cedar Park, and Georgetown areas. His many business affiliations include the Cedar Park Chamber of Commerce, Texas Nursery and Landscape Association, Native Plant Society of Texas, Ladybird Wildflower Center and the Better Business Bureau.  In addition, he has been a member of the Yosemite Association since 1982. 

Kirkland earned his Bachelor of Arts in Biology and Psychology from the University of California and completed the Health and Wellness program at UCLA.  He was recruited to run health programs and fitness centers for various corporate and governmental entities.  Prior to relocating to Texas, Kirkland spent almost 35 years volunteering for organizations including Special Olympics, the Los Angeles Marathon, and YMCA.   

Kirkland has lived in the Forest Oaks subdivision since 2005.  Kirkland is a member of Gateway Church.  In his free time, he enjoys traveling, skiing, exercising, hiking, mountain biking, and taking in the views of the beautiful Texas Hill Country.
