Texas Utility Help

Starting January 2023, Texas Utility Help will cover past-due amounts (if any) PLUS future water and wastewater bills through September 30, 2023, at $85 per month. 

If approved for water and wastewater assistance, Texas Utility Help will automatically send the applicant’s water and wastewater provider one payment equal to:

  • The applicant’s past-due balance (if any) PLUS
  • $85 per month for future bills, through September 30, 2023

Qualifications

  • Household income must be at or below 150% of Federal Poverty Income Guidelines (FPIG).
  • At least one occupant in the household must be a U.S. citizen or qualified alien.
  • For water and wastewater assistance, those who have been disconnected or are at risk of having their service disconnected are prioritized.

Additional Info

Eligible expenses include electricity, gas, propane, water, and wastewater. Total future bills will depend on the payment issue date. For example, payments issued in January will include nine months of future bills. Payments issued in March will include seven months of future bill payments.

Application Process – What to Expect

Submit an application through the online portal. For assistance with the application, contact our Call Center at 1-855-566-2057.

Applications are reviewed to determine whether the household qualifies for program assistance. Check the status of your application online.

Once an application is approved, payment is sent directly to the utility company (electricity, gas, propane, water and/or wastewater provider). Utilities must sign an agreement with the program in order to receive payments.

Examples of Required Documents

  • Identification card
  • Proof of citizenship or legal residency
  • Most recent utility bill (electricity, gas, propane, water, and/or wastewater bill)
  • Income documentation such as award letters or paystubs for each member of your household
  • Documentation showing the utility is disconnected, under threat of disconnect, past due or is a current bill
