Be sure to protect your plumbing during sustained periods of below-freezing temperatures.

  • Wrap outdoor faucets in advance of the freeze
  • You may choose to slowly drip your indoor faucets (especially those along exterior-facing walls) only while temperatures remain below freezing for an extended time (below freezing for several hours)
  • If possible, keep your home heated inside to an above-freezing temperature
  • Open cabinet doors under sinks to expose pipes to heated air inside home

If you suspect your pipes have frozen and/or you have a leak, please contact our police non-emergency dispatch line at 512-260-4600, press “0”.  A dispatcher will notify a Public Works crew to come to your home and turn off your water service to help prevent further damage.

Stay indoors during sub-freezing temperatures.  If you must be outdoors, dress warmly – in layers, and keep hands, feet and head covered.

Bring in pets during freezing weather, and if it isn't possible, provide them adequate shelter and warmth during sub-freezing temperatures.

Bring potted plants inside.  For outdoor plants, water and cover them with fabric.
