City Media & Communications Department wins national & statewide awards
City also recognized for outdoor watering schedules campaign
The City of Cedar Park’s Media & Communications Department continues its longstanding tradition of excellence, earning a 2012 Texas TAMI Award from the Texas Association of Municipal Information Officers for its video production of a newscast highlighting the unveiling of the Veterans Memorial Monument at Veterans Memorial Park last November. The City was also recognized by TAMIO for its “Are you Odd or Even?” citizen education campaign about outdoor watering schedules and water conservation. In addition, the Media & Communcations Department won a Bronze Telly Award for “Why We Love Cedar Park,” a video produced for the City’s Travel & Tourism Department.
While the City of Cedar Park has been recognized by TAMIO with TAMI Silver Star Awards over the past several consecutive years, this year’s TAMI Award for the Veterans Memorial video is the first 1st Place TAMI Award the City has ever garnered. The video, produced by City of Cedar Park Media & Communications Manager Jennie Huerta and Multimedia Specialist Jolen Johnson, was praised by judges for outstanding storytelling as well as creative videography and editing.
“The citizens are what made the Veterans Memorial video a winner,” says Media & Communications Manager Jennie Huerta. “Without them, we would not have been able to tell this beautiful story.”
Why We Love Cedar Park was originally produced for the City’s Travel & Tourism Department, but evolved into something for the entire community. The unique aspect of the Telly Award-winning is that it is ever-changing.
“It is a montage of “stand alone” public service announcements highlighting different parts of the City,” Huerta says. “The announcements can run individually or together in long form, and we can add or delete individual PSAs to keep Why We Love Cedar Park fresh and up-to-date. In fact, we are working on some new additions to the video.”
The Veteran’s Memorial and Why We Love Cedar Park videos may be seen on the City of Cedar Park YouTube Channel, which may be accessed from the City’s new website homepage, www.cedarparktexas.gov. They also run regularly on CPTV-10 News, which airs several times a day on the City’s public access channel, which may be found on Time Warner Cable under Channel 10 and via AT&T Uverse’s Channel 99. You may also watch live streaming of CPTV-10 and see a full broadcast schedule by clicking on the CPTV-10 link near the bottom left of the City’s website homepage.
The City of Cedar Park was also a TAMI Awards Finalist, ranking third among other Texas cities with populations of 50,000 or more, for its campaign to educate citizens about their outdoor watering schedules and water conservation. The project was led by Cedar Park Community Affairs Director Katherine Woerner. The humorous campaign used irony and stereotypes to ask the question, “Are you Odd or Even?” and drive home the message of watering schedules for odd-numbered and even-number addresses. It consists of video ads that run at the local movie theater and online, as well as a micro-website, newspaper and magazine ads, t-shirts, and direct mail magnets.
