Mayor Matt Powell has served on the Cedar Park City Council since 2005 when he was elected to Place One. After seven years of service as a Councilmember, he was selected by the citizens as Mayor in 2012. He is now serving in his third term.

Mayor Powell was born in Long Beach, California in 1976. He attended California Lutheran University, graduating summa cum laude in 1998 with a B.A. in English and Political Science. During college, Mayor Powell served as an intern with the Ronald Reagan Foundation in Simi Valley, served in student government, and was a second tenor in the acclaimed CLU Choir. Matt completed his Masters in Business Administration (MBA) at Concordia University Texas with honors in December 2012, with an emphasis in Organizational Leadership and Management. He was selected for membership in Sigma Beta Delta, the international honor society for business management and administration.

Professionally, Mayor Powell owns a strategic communications consulting firm. He has been certified in Strategic Development of Informed Consent (SDIC) by the Institute for Participatory Management Practices since 2013. Before starting his own business, he served as Deputy Commissioner – Public Affairs for the Texas Department of Insurance and spent four years as Concordia’s Community Relations Director. He additionally provided almost eleven years of service to State Farm Insurance in various capacities, most recently as the company’s Texas Operations Strategist.

During his time on the Cedar Park City Council, Powell has been appointed by his peers to focus on several initiatives, including Cedar Park Center, the new City Hall project, the 2013 Comprehensive Plan committee, the hotel recruiting focus group, the legislative focus group, the City-Chamber Relations panel, the Veterans Memorial committee, the hospital recruiting team, and the City logo/branding project. While serving as a councilman, Powell represented the city as a member of the Capital Area Council of Governments (CAPCOG) Board. Mayor Powell currently represents Cedar Park on the Capital Area Metropolitan Planning Organization (CAMPO) Board.

Active in his community, Mayor Powell was awarded the Lone Star Degree by the Texas FFA in 2016. He was selected as a Public Policy Fellow by the University of Texas Center for Public Policy Dispute Resolution in 2014, and as an LISD Community Champion in 2008. In 2007, he was awarded the Cedar Park Fire Chief’s Commendation Ribbon for volunteerism in the Cedar Park community. He graduated from the Cedar Park Citizens’ Police Academy in 2004. He served for five years as an emeritus member on the Cedar Park Library Foundation Board of Directors and has volunteered time to help the United Way and Habitat for Humanity. Mayor Powell has been named “Best Elected Official” by readers of the Hill Country News on multiple occasions.

His efforts to involve young people in government and the political process led to Mayor Powell being named “Man of the Year” by the Texas Young Republican Federation in 2004. He served two terms as that organization’s National Committeeman from 2003 to 2005. In November 2004, he was named national chairman of the federation’s armed services policy team, where he led a team in formulating positions on military and defense issues.

Mayor Powell and his wife, Heather, were married in 1999 and reside in the Ranch at Brushy Creek subdivision. Heather is also a Cal Lutheran graduate, and earned her M.A. in Sociology from The University of Texas at Austin. Their daughter, Lark, is a Cedar Park native, having been born at Cedar Park Regional Medical Center in 2010. The Powells attend Gethsemane Lutheran Church.
