The Cedar Park Fire Department History
The Cedar Park Fire Department was established in 1972 as a volunteer department when the population was approximately 687. In 1994, the first five career firefighters were hired and worked a 40-hour week in conjunction with the volunteers. The City continued to hire full-time firefighters and a full-time paid Chief as the population increased. In 2001, the Fire Department essentially became a full-time paid department under the City organization. The Fire Department responds to calls in both the City and the ETJ serving a population of approximately 80,000 people. The Center for Public Safety Excellence conferred accredited status to Cedar Park Fire Department in 2014.
Fire Administration - The Fire Administration Staff consists of the Fire Chief, two assistant chiefs, one administrative assistant, four battalion chiefs (three in suppression and one in training), and one management analyst.
Emergency Operations - The Cedar Park Fire Department currently has four fire stations. The Department has two quints, two engines and one battalion chief on duty each day. The Fire Department currently has 60 people assigned to the emergency operations division. Each engine and quint is assigned one lieutenant, one driver, and two firefighters. There are three extra firefighters per shift, who rotate to cover for firefighters in training or off duty.
Emergency Management- The Department of Homeland Security and Emergency Management utilizes an all hazard approach to prepare, mitigate, respond and recover from emergencies and disasters. By partnering with both Fire and Police and through public education and monitoring of potential threats is incorporated to ensure that the citizens of Cedar Park live in the safest place possible. The Office is responsible for all disaster plans for the city and maintains close connections with area Emergency Management organizations in order to maintain a constant state of readiness to respond to any major emergency or disaster.
Fire Prevention Division- One of Fire Administration's assistant chiefs serves as Fire Marshal. The Fire Prevention Division also has a battalion chief who serves as the Assistant Fire Marshal, three full-time fire inspectors, and one administrative assistant.
Training - The Training Division is run by the training battalion chief, with assistance of a lieutenant. Other emergency operations staff provide additional support.
Dispatchers - The Fire Department contributes three staff to the Public Safety Communications Division.
