Gold Star Families Monument at Veterans Memorial Park
The American Legion Post 911 in Cedar Park has dedicated a monument to honor Central Texas families who have lost a loved one in military service. The monument was placed at the Cedar Park Veterans Memorial Park and is part of an effort by the Hershel “Woody” Williams Medal of Honor Gold Star Families Foundation to build one such monument in each of the 50 states. The monument in Cedar Park is the first Gold Star Monument in Texas.
The dedication ceremony on September 23, 2017 included Gold Star family recognition, an unveiling of the monument, a wreath-laying ceremony and a flyover by the Texas National Guard. Multiple Gold Star families participated as well as the WilCo Blue Star Mothers, a number of veteran service organizations, and federal, state and locally elected officials. Remarks were delivered by Woody Williams, the last surviving United States Marine Corps WWII veteran to receive the Congressional Medal of Honor.
